Generally, Kichadi means a comfortable food with dal or vegetables, delicious meal to have an active day. Easy to prepare with minimal effort &less time as a meal or evening supper, I have followed few tricks in this variant just a small twist to have a good taste. This will be tasty to enjoy with a simple raitha or fried potatoes. There are several methods to prepare Kichadi with rice, Rava, dal, oats as we wish to have the version may vary. Here, I have used Aval in Tamil, Poha in Hindi, flattened rice flakes in English, as the main ingredients, and an easy method to follow this awesome taste. Aval is easy to cook and another advantage is any age group of people can take with confidence easy digestible and healthy too. In this type of preparation added coconut milk will give mild sweet and creamy flavor in addition, to mention here. Vegetables can be used as we prefer based on the availability, with desired spices and aroma makes the dish tastier. Not involved any specific method to follow however you make it will be tasty get the recipe below.
Method to follow:
Ingredients:
Rice flakes-1 cup medium thick it can be red or white
(Poha)
Vegetables as you prefer -3/4 cup, Chopped
Onion-1 medium size chopped
Oil-/Ghee-11/2 tbsp
Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Urad dal-1/2 tsp
Broken Cashews-2 tsp
Curry leaves
Coriander leaves chopped
Chopped ginger or garlic can be added if you prefer to have more spiced. I have not added any as feel to have mild taste.
To Grind ingredients, for milk to soak:
Coconut -3 tbsp
Tomato small
Salt-1/4 tsp
Plain chili powder-1/4 tsp
Add warm water grind all together and extract milk of 1 cup milk to soak Aval (Poha)
- Keep things ready all the above-said ingredients and coconut milk.
- Soak Aval in the coconut, tomato milk extracted. Soak for 2 to 3 minutes based on the thickness of your Aval. (Do not soak for a long time). This will give creamy and mild sweetness by the coconut extract moreover we are not cooking for a long time which can help to get the nutritional values as such.

4.Heat oil or ghee and temper the seasoning ingredients.
4.Add onion and saute for a while, then vegetables cook for a minute or two no need to add water.
5.Sprinkle a few salt for the vegetables, now add soaked Aval keep stirring let it get mixed well. Not necessary to cook for a long time after adding soaked aval 3 minutes in the low flame will be sufficient to make this ready.
Sprinkle some chopped coriander leaves and roasted cashews, ready to serve along with flavored yogurt or hot beverages.
